Here we are! The end of term is 6 school days away! Where has the year gone? As you know we are now making preparations for the next year. All the children know who their teachers are going to be next year. There may be one change in so much as a new teacher may be recruited at the start of the Summer holiday to commence duties in September. The teacher is likely to work in Key Stage 1. Mrs Middleton and Miss Mailer are setting up the school as they require it from September 2010.
Mrs Knott is leaving us after one year in school to take up a new post at St. Andrews CE Infant School. Mrs Knott has worked closely on supporting our readers in Key Stage 1. The close support has shown some excellent results. We wish Mrs Knott every happiness in her new school and thank her for all her work this year.
Mrs Woodward is also leaving us after 5 years at Leigh School. Mrs Woodward has been unwell for most of the Summer term. Mrs Woodward is hoping to return to some of our school activities next week to say goodbye. Mrs Woodward has worked in a variety of roles at this school. She has been a class teacher in Year 4, a teacher of sets last year and for most of this year in Year 1. Mrs Woodward has been in charge of Science and all the children remember our Science days. We thank Mrs Woodward for all her hard work in the past and wish her the very best for her future career.
This week has continued to be a busy one. On Monday our ‘Artspace’ group attended the grand opening of the ‘art’ that will be on permanent display at the Xcel Centre. All local schools, in conjunction with professional artists, have created pottery masterpieces, which will be hung on the stair wall of the Xcel Centre.
Lisa Williamson from the Herbert Art Gallery led assembly on Tuesday. The subject was ‘Apes’ and it previewed an exhibition at the HAG during the Summer holiday.
All of our Year 6 children have now visited their new school. Mrs Knibb, Mrs Bailey and the class are putting the final touches to their wonderful show called ‘Wishful Thinking’. This will be performed to parents and children on Monday 19th July at 2pm. Come along and join us.
Year 5 went to Westwood School on Thursday for a mini Olympics competition, and came away with silver medals – well done Year 5. EGO theatre and three neighbouring schools visited our Year 6 on Thursday to share their film work.
On Friday Year 6 are spending the day in London and Years 4/5 are going to the Think Tank in Birmingham. Year 6 are going on the London Eye, a river cruise and a walk through the Westminster area.
Next week, the last week of term, we will be holding certificate presentations to all children.

Year 6 will be presented with their certificates and a Leavers Bible at the Leavers Service at St. James Church. The Service is scheduled to start at 2pm. Everyone is welcome to attend any of the presentations. On Friday at 9:00am each of the classes are performing a song and other items for our final assembly of the year.
It will be then be the time for me to say goodbye to all the wonderful pupils of Leigh School. School will close at 2:30pm on Friday 23rd July. There will be one more newsletter in the middle of next week to confirm arrangements for the start of the next term.

What a wonderful day we’ve had! Sports morning went off without hitch. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The sun shone and the children participated in a variety of sporting activities. The staff have been brilliant organising all the sports. Thank you Mr Robinson for setting up and sorting out such a superb morning. Many thanks to all parents, relatives and friends of the children who came along and supported.
On Tuesday, we hosted a ‘Performance Morning’ and five other schools from Coventry came to Leigh School to show a variety of dance, drama and film making projects connected with the Cov Kool Kids initiative. Our Year 2 dancers performed brilliantly. Many thanks to Miss Benwell and Mrs Malone for continuing Chris’ practice and ideas.
A group of 12 Canadian teachers also visited the school to see how we organise Primary Education in England. They were very impressed with the school and asked lots of questions and took lots of photographs of our displays.
On Tuesday afternoon our ‘Artspace’ group went to Westwood School to continue their joint project which will be displayed at the Xcel Centre.
Our new Reception class children came into school for a morning and had lunch.
On Thursday our Year 2 children went on a visit to Coventry Cathedral. It was an interesting visit for everyone. In the afternoon our ‘Schools of Sanctuary’ project group went to Westwood School for the launch of a special behaviour charter which is to be adopted in local primary schools. Our children have contributed a lot to the project and I thank Mrs Brook for organising the project.
Next week our Artspace work is being shown at the Xcel Centre. The grand opening is at 11am. Please join us if you can.

Our new Reception class children spent another afternoon at Leigh preparing for their inclusion in the school from September.
Year 2 have completed their practice for their performance of their ‘Dance’ in the Cov Kool Kids show. Lots of children from other schools will be here on Tuesday to share their performances. Year 2 will perform their ‘Dance’ to parents, friends and the whole school next Friday at 2:30pm. After this performance our Year 5 African Drum Group will play.

Next week we will be holding our ‘Sports Morning’ on Friday 9th July. All are welcome to support. In the evening our PTA will hold their combined Summer Fair (starts now at 6:15pm) followed by the Family Disco from 7pm-8:45pm. Please purchase your tickets by Wednesday.

The sun has shone! England has won! What more do we want? As usual we’ve had a really busy week at Leigh.
On Monday our ‘new’ Reception parents met in school with Miss Askew, their teacher for next year. It was good to see Mrs Middleton, the new Head Teacher of Leigh CE Primary in school to meet staff and our ‘new’ parents. Thank you to Miss Scrimshaw, our Parent Governor, who also came in.
On Tuesday Karen Berry led assembly with her puppets. Year 5 went to the Partnership Centre to study Tudor Homes.
On Wednesday our Coventry Diocese Education visitor, Hazel Smith, visited the school to make her final report on the school. Everyone should be encouraged by the report that Hazel wrote, which includes this statement:-
“This was an impressive visit to the school. It has had many ups and downs over past years, but it presents itself today as a bright, loving and caring environment in which to nurture these young people”
A lot of work by a lot of people has enabled this comment to be written and I thank them all very, very much.
On Thursday eight of our children spent an afternoon in the Microscopy section of the Physics department of Warwick University. They were able to study a variety of ‘dead’ things under the powerful microscopes.

This week some of our Year 5 pupils have been performing their ‘Mysteries’ dance at the Bubble Chamber in Coventry. I had the privilege of watching their first performance. It was fantastic – so professional and inspiring. The theme of ‘Forgiveness’ linked very well with our Peace and Reconciliation work. We were pleased to see our children performing this piece of work on the BBC News on Thursday.
Our Year 6 pupils have finished their film making project with EGO Theatre and we are looking forward to seeing the finished product. Mrs Knibb and the class are busy rehearsing their play for their end of year performance in the last week of term.

Some of our pupils (and parents) are worried about seeing the England v Algeria game next Wednesday, as it starts at 3pm. Unfortunately we do not have a TV licence or a TV screen at school. So, as to encourage full attendance, we are making the following arrangements. On Wednesday 23rd June, children who want to support the England team can be collected from the main entrance of the school at 2:15pm. This will give parents/guardians time to transport children to the place that you want to watch the match.
Parents who wish their children to stay at school until the normal time can do so. There will be staff and learning activities on site until children go home. There will not be any after school activities on Wednesday 23rd June.
Please help us plan the afternoon by returning the slip. We will not allow any child to leave this site unless we have written consent from a parent/guardian. This is most important if your child is to walk home from school.
Our teachers are finalising the annual reports for each child and these are to be sent out by 16th July.

I hope everyone enjoyed the half term holiday with the children. Leigh School has been a hive of activity this week. We returned to school to find out that the boys football team had won on the last day of last half term. The boys played brilliantly and beat Allesley Hall Primary 4-0. The boys have had a fairly successful season winning 3 and losing 2 of their games. Whatever the results the boys have always given 100%. I’m sure that you’ll all be wishing the same for England as they start their quest for the World Cup.
There has been a buzz of activity in school this week with Year 6 working with the EGO Theatre on their film making project. Twelve children from Year 5 have been going to the Bubble Chamber each day to rehearse for next week’s Coventry Mystery Plays. Their dance teacher works the class extremely hard and the children (and their teacher) return to school exhausted! Some of our Keystage 2 children have also had the opportunity to have intensive swimming lessons. Cycle training has also started on a weekly basis for our Year 5 children.
During the week I attended the annual ‘Cross of Nails’ service at Coventry Cathedral with some of our pupils. It was amazing to see the Cathedral full of youngsters from schools that have, or aspire to have the ‘Cross of Nails’. We played a recording of one of our Peace Songs which were composed by Year 5 and recorded, with a musical soundtrack by Matt Bramhall. Everyone seemed to like our ‘SOS’ song.
On Friday all of our Foundation Class, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 went on a day trip to the ‘Conkers’ experience. We also hosted 25 children from Westwood School and local Primary schools working on the ‘Schools of Sanctuary’ project. The group have worked together to establish a ‘charter’ to be used at each schoo.

It has been another hectic week for our children and staff at Leigh School
Twelve of our Year 5 children started a new dance project this week, which the children seem to really enjoy. This is in conjunction with the Coventry Mystery Plays. The rehearsals will continue until after the half term break and then parents will be invited into the school to watch their end performance. They will also be performing as part of the Coventry Mystery Plays with Frederick Bird, time and location to be advised.
Year 2 have been working hard at their SATS. Well done everyone, including Miss Benwell and Mrs Malone, and thank you for all your hard work.
Our school football team had an away game against Whoberley Hall on Tuesday, winning 4- 3 – well done lads! Let’s hope you do as well next week against Allesley Hall.
Year 4 competed in a Cricket Festival on Wednesday, and had a great time, winning most of their matches. Year 5 will be taking part in the same festival next Wednesday – please remember sun cream.
I hope you have all noticed our big, bright new signs advertising our school. There should be no problem in people finding us now!
Can I remind everyone, when entering or leaving the school to please push bikes/scooters on and off site. There was an incident this week when a Reception child was knocked over by someone on a bike. Fortunately the child was fine on this occasion, but we might not be so fortunate next time.
Our jewellery policy for earrings is one plain stud per ear. Please ensure your child does not wear hoop or sparkly earrings during the school day.
It looks like our summer is finally here. Please remember to send in sun cream and hats to protect your child. We will encourage your child to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
This week looks set to be barbeque week, so remember your sun cream too, and have a great time!

A strange, short week at Leigh CE Primary School has ended. Having two days out can be unsettling for both staff and children.
During the week our Year 6 have been able to come into school to have breakfast together as they prepare for their SATs tests next week. After great deliberation the children in Year 6 at Leigh will sit the tests in the normal way for one more year. I really hope that our ‘new’ government, whoever it may be, will take a serious look at the whole issue of whether the tests for 11 year olds in their current form are still viable and cost effective.
Our younger boys football team played against Limbrick Wood and won 4-2. Some great football was played. Well done lads!
Year 4 have continued their swimming lessons.

All parents and relatives of the children are invited to join us at our service which starts at 2pm. This week has been very eventful. On Monday, Martin Malone kicked off the first Artspace workshop after school. Children began designing their own tiles in preparation for a permanent art display at the Xcel Centre.
Year 2 visited the Partnership Centre in Cheylesmore as part of their topic on the Victorians. Children had fun dressing up in Victorian clothes as well as making bookmarks. They also painted pictures of Victorian houses using stencils. You can see a display of their work outside the hall.
On Wednesday, Mr Combellack from the Warwickshire Cricket Board started after school cricket sessions for Key Stage 2 children. There are still some places left and each session costs £1. Please speak to the office staff if your child is interested.
This afternoon, two singers (Peter and Charlie) from Armonico Consort, came to visit Key Stage 2. They recently worked with Year 5 to produce a musical in a day and were overwhelmed by our children’s achievements. They played singing games with the children & taught them a short African song. If your child was inspired and would like the opportunity to participate in their choir, please return the slip from the letter they will be bringing home today, to the office. They are offering places at a very reasonable rate of 50p a week.
Finally, the Year 6 breakfast club started today and was a huge success. The majority of the pupils came for breakfast and had fun testing their mental maths skills as part of an inter-house competition. Mrs Knibb commented on how much more relaxed the children were before their mock tests. Breakfast club will continue next week.

I do hope that everyone had an enjoyable Easter holiday and that any members or friends of your family are now back safely if they were caught up in the chaos caused by the volcanic ash plume. I can assure you that Mrs Brook (stuck in America) and myself (stuck in Gibraltar) are both really glad to be back at school after very exhausting long journeys home!
The first week back has proved memorable for our Year 6 and 12 Year 5 children as they were all involved in our Business Activity Day on Wednesday. You may recall that Leigh is one of 36 schools spread across the whole of England that is piloting a ‘Career Related Learning’ project for 10/11 year olds. The Business Day is one of the activities and was interesting for all concerned. We had representatives of Cavendish Engineering, Dennis Eagle Manufacturing, Coventry Building Society, Jaguar, Landrover, JRH Builders and Ericsson communications. Children took it in turns to work with each business and try to understand about skills required for work. Feedback from the businesses again underlined how well behaved and focussed our children can be.
Matt Bramhall has also been in recording the lovely ‘peace’ songs written by our Year 4 and 5 children. These will be performed at Coventry Cathedral in June.
Year 4 have started swimming and cricket coaching has already re-commenced.
Our children had the opportunity to eat Roast Beef and all the trimmings on St. Georges Day today.

Our children have been given a Palm Cross today to keep and to remember that we start Holy Week. Rev Steve Burch is leading assembly every day next week at 9:00am to tell the Easter Story. Parents are welcome to join us.

A belated Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all our families with Irish connections. Some of our Year 3 and 4 children went to a Netball Tournament at Warwick University and won 2 and drew 2 of their games, well done to our team.
Our School council hosted a visit by the School council of ‘The Revel C.E. Primary School’ located in Monks Kirby in Warwickshire. We visited their school the next day. Our liaison is based on ways we can work together and promote Christian Learning between our schools.
We had a very active assembly on Thursday when all staff and children enjoyed a lively dance and exercise session led by the Animated Dance Company who organise classes at the Heart of England School. All children had access to the company details if parents are interested in letting a child attend the sessions. The company will be back later in the year to lead a whole day session with all classes.
Thank you for supporting the ‘Sports Relief’ charity. Our school raised £160.47
Well done to our Year 3 for leading such a lively and interesting assembly. It is really rewarding to see children growing in confidence.
Some of our Year 5 attended a day of ‘Schools of Sanctuary’ work. A project undertaken by local primary schools and Westwood School.
Next Friday, Mrs Middleton who will be the next and permanent Head Teacher of Leigh C.E Primary School will be here to meet parents and staff and pupils. Do join us in assembly and stay to have a chat with Mrs Middleton.
Later on next Friday at 2.45pm our Year 4 children will be presenting their work completed with Matt Bramhall a professional musician. All are welcome to attend. Parents attending can take their child home when the assembly finishes.

We have just had an eventful week at Leigh. A large group of Years 4/5 joined with other local schools to perform at Coventry Cathedral. The subject was the Coronation of Henry VIII. Our school was praised for their excellent behaviour and contributions to the success of the project run by the Armonico Theatre Company.
A group of Year 3 and 4 pupils went to the Alan Higgs Centre to join in a football tournament. Our girls played Netball against Whoberley Hall Primary School. The girls played well but were outclassed on this occasion. The children have access to many professional coaches during the school day. Groups of our children are currently being coached in Cricket and Football. Gymnastics is available (at a small cost) after school on Tuesdays and Fridays.
In the process of ‘interviewing’ the candidates for the Headship of Leigh School our School Council were key members of that process. The Governors valued their input and the sensible questions that were asked. Next week our School Council is hosting a visit from the Revel C.E. Primary School on Wednesday and are also visiting their school on Thursday afternoon. The ‘Revel’ is a primary school set in Monks Kirby, a small village, near Rugby in Warwickshire. We hope the link is the start of a productive liaison between the two schools.
We have a huge amount of ‘lost’ property in school. I will be showing the children the huge collection and hoping some of it is recognised. It would greatly help if all sweatshirts, cardigans, fleeces, trousers, blouses and shirts could be named in some way. We could then give the ’lost’ property back to the children. Thank you for your help in this matter.

Mrs Middleton, the new Headteacher of Leigh Primary School has sent me a message to pass on to the parents to the effect that she is really looking forward to becoming part of the Leigh Family and working closely with everyone. Mrs Middleton will be in school on the morning of Friday March 26th to meet children, staff and parents.

We have had a very interesting and inspirational week in school. I am pleased to inform all parents that the Governors came to a decision on Thursday and have appointed Mrs D. Middleton to the permanent Headship of our lovely school. Mrs Middleton is currently the Acting Headteacher at a school in Nuneaton and comes to her new post at Leigh with substantial experience. I know that she will be very happy to lead our school into the future. Mrs Middleton will start in September.
We welcome Blanca Minambres Alvarez, a student from Zamora, Spain who is spending a month with us, helping the children to learn some Spanish.
Our Year 6 went to Woodlands School to see the joint production by Woodlands/Tile Hill Wood of the musical ‘Oliver’. By all accounts it was a fantastic afternoon for all concerned.
Our Year 4/5 spent an afternoon dancing ‘Tudor Dances’ with the help of Armonico Theatre.
To complete our week we had a fabulous performance by the ‘Fat Cats’ a band led by Matt Bramhall as part of our Cov. Cool Kids experience. Lots of our children joined in as backing singers, air guitarists, dancers or playing piano. We had a tremendous morning. Our year 5 also sang their ‘Peace’ songs that they made up as part of our Peace and Reconciliation Project.
Next week, our Year 4/5 are performing their part of the Tudor Pageant at Coventry Cathedral. All are welcome to go to the performance at 2:00pm.

Newsletter in full with dates
I hope everyone had an enjoyable half term with their children. It was a bonus for everyone (well children mostly!) to have snow on the ground last Friday. It was nice for me not to feel guilty for having to think about closing the school as it was already half term!
We restarted school on Monday with 162 children on roll, the highest number for several years. Thank you to parents who are spreading the good news about our school.
Next week is an important week for our school, as the Governors are interviewing candidates for the vacant “permanent” Headship of this lovely school. I have really enjoyed being Acting Head for what will be 3 years and will leave with many fond memories. The school has had 3 Acting Heads since 2006 and it is now the right time for another person to take the helm and lead the school forward at this exciting time in education. The Governors will be informing you of the outcome of the interviews as soon as possible. Please keep the Governors in your prayers this week.
It has been a very busy week again. All our children enjoyed 'Speedmark'. The highest child score was 44mph (the speed at which a football was kicked). Please send in your sponsor money as soon as possible.
Next week March begins! Our Year 6 are attending a dress rehearsal of the popular musical Oliver at Woodlands School on Tuesday. On Friday Matt Bramhall, the musician who has been working with our Year 4 children on the Cov Kool Kids project, is performing with his band at our Friday morning assembly from 9:30am – unfortunately Toddler Group will be cancelled this day, please accept our sincere apologies. Parents are welcome to join us from 9am on Friday to watch our assembly.

Diary and Activities
The end of half term and we are also half way through the academic year.
During this week we have had assemblies about ‘being safe on the internet’, how to join in the Speedmark event, Love (Valentine’s day) led by Rev. Steve Burch and a very entertaining presentation assembly when our youngest children performed a Chinese New Year Dragon dance.
I’m so glad so many parents could attend our parent-teacher conference to find out about your child’s progress.
Our year 4/5 girls had a very interesting visit to Tile Hill Wood School to meet Sarah Webb, an author who writes especially for girls. She was very inspirational and motivated some girls to say ‘… when I grow up I want to be a writer’.
Our year 6 took part in a Cricket Festival at Coventry Connexion with some success – Well done.
We have re-arranged our ‘Houses’ at Leigh and the children will now be assigned to Starley, Whittle or (our new house) Singer. Children will have new badges and we will start with house points after half-term.
Our PTA held a very successful Valentine Disco. The children enjoyed themselves and it looks like we’ll have another Disco in late March.
Our Year 6 have had a CD produced with electronic music that they composed at the Partnership Centre. The whole school heard the first track today and everyone was suitable impressed. All of our Year 6 will have their own copy – Radio 1 – here we come!!
Our Foundation Stage outdoor play area has had an extension made to the canopy to enable our youngest children to access the play areas without being too cold.

Dates and Activities
January is nearly over! We are glad that the weather has remained consistent this week as we try to catch up on the missing days.
Lots of different activities have taken place this week. Our Year 2 children visited the ‘Partnership Centre’ to study a topic called ‘The Young Electrician’. Our Year 4 children had their first music session with professional musician Matt Bramhall and have started work on their Cov Kool Kids presentation. Eden, Scott and Joe (from Year 6) represented our school at the annual Coventry School’s Year 6 conference at Network Rail and were a real credit to school and families. All our Year 5 children visited Warwick University for an action packed ‘Science’ day. Year 3 started their swimming lessons (which will be on every Tuesday until further notice).
Year 1 led a very active assembly for us today. It is really encouraging to see so many parents attending our Friday assembly. Our ‘Playgroup’ meets in the school hall afterwards until late morning. If you have a toddler who requires company on a Friday morning come along and join us at Leigh.
Next week some of our Year 4 and all Year 5 will start a project based on ‘The Tudors’ which culminates in a performance at Coventry Cathedral on Monday 8th March. Parents are most welcome to attend the afternoon performance (details to follow).
Some of our Year 5 are also involved in a local school’s project called ‘Schools of Sanctuary’ and will be having their second meeting next Friday.
Please remember to send your parent/teacher meeting request back. Our school closes at 2:30pm on Tuesday 9th February and Wednesday 10th February. Parent/Teacher meetings start at 4pm and continue until 6:30pm.
Our PTA are organising a Valentine’s Disco for children who attend this school. The Disco is in our school hall on Thursday 11th February. Entrance is £2.00 per child. The disco starts at 6:00pm and will finish promptly at 7:30pm.
Governors have started the process to recruit a new Head Teacher for the school with a National advert being placed in Educational newspapers next week. The Governors hope to interview suitable candidates in early March. The Governors would like your input as to what parents are looking for in a Head Teacher, please complete the slip attached to the newsletter or email the school at info@leighcofeprimary.com and return to the school office by Monday. At least we have managed a whole week in school....thank you weather!! It feels like we have started the term now.
We had a really positive start to the week when our 'Fun for Fathers' session took place. We had a brilliant turn out (our highest ever) it looked like everyone enjoyed the Gruffalo experience! We have another session planned for the Summer term.
Our Coventry Diocese architect visited us and soon we will be completing our development plan for the children's play areas and installing other safety features in school.
All the children enjoyed the pantomime Robin Hood in our school hall. The theatre group we employ are top class and will be back in May to perform the second part of the Cosmic Crew story (all the children thoroughly enjoyed the first part).
Our Governors also met this week to deliberate about advertising for a permanent Headteacher for the school. Dr Cuttler, our Chair of Governors will be contacting parents to explain the process.
Some of our children have been having special basketball training for the Hoops for Health initiative. Our Year 4 start their Coventry Cool Kids music work with a professional musician next week. The performance is at the end of March. Details are being sent out regarding parent’s evenings on February 9th and 10th.

Lots of activities have had to be cancelled or postponed since the start of term. One re-arranged activity was called the Coventry Inspirational Book Bout. Mrs Knibb, Mrs Bailey and six of our Year 6 children attended a competition involving eight schools. The object of the exercise, was to present to the other schools reasons why the book allocated to the school (ours was called Archie’s War) should be the book that children should vote for, to win the competition. I attended the ‘Bout’ with the children and I was so proud of their presentation. They were brilliant – so brilliant in fact that the Library Service Managers voted our children’s presentation as the best (awarding all children, and the school with school books as prizes) and the children from other schools voted Archie’s War in to 2nd place, (just two points behind the winner). Everyone’s efforts were very impressive. A great start to the term!
Let’s hope the weather is kinder to us from now on. We’ve had such a stop/start early part of term. Thank you for your co-operation and understanding regarding our closures this week and last week. Our two main problems are accessibility to the site and our supply of salt/grit. Despite many pleas, Plantshill Crescent never seems to get gritted, thus causing dangerous surfaces for anyone trying to access the area. We only have 2 small grit bins on site which traditionally have contained enough grit/salt to use on site most winters. This year supplies have been erratic arriving at school, therefore stopping our hard working Site Officer, Mr Malone, from maintaining safe pathways for everyone. We used the last salt/grit last Friday morning, but then had an emergency delivery. We do have enough salt/grit left to keep main pathways open. There is not enough to safely clear playground areas. We hope for rain and a thaw over the weekend. To prepare for future times of severe weather we have ordered 2 more grit/salt bins for school use. This should help in future years.
